Blender, the Open Source software, got its start as the in-house software for an Amsterdam animation company. It is actually had more done with it than just the demonstration project (http://bigbuckbunny.org ).
The problem with answering ur question of course is so much of the development is being done in UNIX/GNU Linux because that makes it so straightforward & easy to access the power of networks. And of course, the real problem with talking about UNIX-derived Operating Systems is that since especially the most well-heeled users tend to use it for special purposes, the software u would be talking about is not necessarily going to be advertised or discussed around consumers. There r a lot of alternatives out there. And like any type of software, some of the ''alternatives'' r actually the same programs with different names. If u want to follow it that closely u can sort it out, but otherwise, the answer is simply yes.
