In my 2-D art class at school we get our grades by how well we try and follow directions (not by how well our artwork is.)
But, l am missing a few points, so to make those points (extra credit) up my teacher said to draw a realistic close up of my favorite actor/actress. l chose Taylor Lautner.

l am having a really tough time drawing him, any tips?

l am taking art too! :) We are working on realistic portraits. Start the drawing with the eyes, then work your way by drawing the nose then the mouth. Next, outline the face (shape of head) and then draw the hair. You can see the dark areas on his face because of the light, so those you want to sketch in (for example around the nose). Then you can finish drawing the rest of his body. Good luck!

1. Your class sounds terrible. l go to college for art & any of my teachers would tear yours to shreds for trying to teach that way.
2. Drawing from a photo is a pathetic way to learn to draw. l suggest doing some personal work where u draw from a model, whether Living (Human or animal) or inanimate (still life, fruit or whatever.)

Now l am not blaming you, l am blaming ur teacher, & l under stand u want a good grade, so here is a sight that teaches u gridding.
http://drawsketch.about.com/od/drawinglessonsandtips/ss/griddrawing.htm

What l suggest is that u grid to get the basic shape of his face, especially since its a odd face. then trace lightly onto ur final piece of paper. So that u can have the basic structure without all the grid lines.
After that l suggest u ditch gridding & rarely to never use it again. It gives u cool looking pictures but it stunts ur artistic growth & will never be as meaningful as drawing from a model.

And yes there r famous artists that use gridding. Chuck Close does. But he uses it in a different way, He uses a grid, but does not make an exact copy instead of doing it line for line, he does odd shapes that represent the color & line of the picture

Gridding in its raw for is just plagiarism.
for example

You seem wise to her scheme, so good luck, l wish u the best

use a grid. grid your paper & the picture.

after you have the grid, try drawing it upside down. that way, you do not see an eye, and an eye, but more as a shape you're trying to recreate. you will draw a lot more acurately this way.

also, you can use a view finder with the grid which will just help you to see everything ONE box at a time instead of doing it fast & rushing through it.
